What is the heating capacity of a Q.rad? What is the heating quality delivered by a Q.rad?

A Q.rad can heat a 150 to 250 sq. feet room in a building meeting modern isolation standards. The Q.rad is a system with high inertia and produces a high quality soft heat as opposed to electrical convectors.

Can I regulate the heating power?

The heat produced by the Q.rad is regulated by a thermostat controlled by the user either directly on each Q.rad or remotely through the Home by Qarnot smartphone application.

What kind of installation is suitable for Q.rads ?

Qarnot addresses the business market : real estate, construction companies, building owners. Our solution is suitable for all kinds of buildings : residential, commercial buildings, offices, as well as hospitals, agencies or schools. Both new-built and refurbishment buildings are suitable for the installation of Q.rads.

As an individual, how can I get Q.rads?

For now, we only install Q.rads in buildings for a minimum of 20 units ! We receive a lot of requests from individuals aking for smaller commands, and we hope to be able to provide them with our free and green heating solution in the near future. This process could speed up if the legal framework evolves to promote the exploitation of the fatal heat generated by the ICT within buildings, and/or to encourage companies efforts to reduce the carbon footprint related to their use of ICT.

What happens in summer? What happens when there are no computation tasks to run?

The processors of the Q.rads are regulated to meet the target temperature defined by the end-user. The computing power is naturally impacted by seasonality. By using processors low power modes and by choosing adapted deployment sites, Qarnot manages to keep a minimum computing capacity all year long. To compute all-year round when computing demand is higher than the deployed capacity, Qarnot also starts to have partnerships with green data centers and to develop other products for sites that need heat all year long (water, industry/agriculture).

Qarnot computing is setting up partnerships with private and public research centers and labs which regularly launch computation campaigns that can last up to several years. Such campaigns include BOINC and many other academic projects. Thus, Q.rads will always have a background buffer of useful computations to process to produce heat when inhabitants need heating.

What about computation security?

Qarnot computing platform integrates state-of-the-art security modules for encryption and authentication to propose an end-to-end data protection. In addition, Q.rads computing nodes are stateless without any storage.

Is the Q.rad noisy? Does the Q.rad emit any electromagnetic waves?

Q.rads are totally silent since there are no mobile parts inside the Q.rad (no ventilators, no hard drives). Q.rads use a cable connection to the network instead of a Wi-Fi connection, for both security and performance. Furthermore, all IT components are integrated in a metallic box that blocks the weak sources of electromagnetic waves like processors as in a standard desktop computer.

What is the lifetime of the Q.rad?

The Q.rad is replaced for free every 3 to 5 years to maintain a high-end processing farm. The replacement intervention is very simple : the Q.rad is just unplugged and replaced by a new one.

How is it possible to provide free heating? Who pays for the electricity bill?

Qarnot computing sells the computing power of the Q.rads to companies and research centers. The selling of these services pays for the electricity used by the Q.rads and therefore the heating that is produced. Each Q.rad continuously records its energetic (kW/h) and computing (CPU.h) consumption which enables Qarnot to bill its computing clients and refund the electricity consumed.

Why is your company called Qarnot computing ?

It’s a tribute to the French physicist and engineer Sadi Carnot (1796 – 1832). The ‘Q’ letter refers to the physical symbol for heat. Through his only book, written at the age of 27, Reflection on the Motive Power of Fire, he’s considered as the ‘father’ of thermodynamics. He revolutionized the world of science and industry. During the 20st century, his statement on irreversibility of physical phenomena, in particular during heat exchange, has been extended to the information theory, computers being nothing more than… calculating machines.
